March 3, 2009 Newsletter
The following is an update on current Magic: the Gathering events at The Relentless Dragon.
Monday Night:
Monday night is discount MTG draft night! This is an unsanctioned casual event that is run every Monday evening. Sign-up begins at 6PM and the draft begins at 6:30PM. Past participation has been outstanding with anywhere from 8 to 16 people draftomg each week. The entry fee is only $8! Current format is Shards/Shards/Conflux. Due to the low-cost of the draft additional prizes of store credit are not given. DCI Wizards Play Network Promo cards may be awarded based on availability. Please note that we run a 'back-draft' at the conclusion of the draft--all rares are put into a pool and picks are made based on tournament standings. Everyone walks away with at least their 3 packs worth of cards and very frequently more!
Still in the planning stages...
We want everyone who drafts with us to have as much fun as possible. Of course not everyone can win every match, but you shouldn't have to feel that you lost your game or match because you didn't know how to draft or construct a limited format deck. Based on this, we would like to put together a 'drafting seminar' for new players or even those who may be experienced players but inexperienced drafters. Topics to be discussed would include:
- Making the right picks from your packs
- Sending signals/reading signals
- Deck construction including balance (creatures, spells, lands), mana curve, etc.
- Shards of Alara and Conflux card evaluations
While our staff may not necessarily be drafting pros, let our combined experience on the topic assist you in getting more enjoyment out of the game. We will hold a draft after the seminar so you can put your newly learned skills to immediate use.
Please contact us (email info@relentlessdragon.com) and let us know if you would be interested in such a session and if so when a good time would be. Based on the feedback we receive we will schedule this session appropriately.
Thursday Night:
Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH). EDH is a casual multiplayer format where your deck contains 99 cards and 1 legendary 'General'. Your deck can only contain one copy of each card except for basic land. EDH is an extremely fun format where pretty much everything goes. You know all those rares in your trade binder that don't fit in any competitive decks? They may have a great home in an EDH deck. Come in to play or even just to get deck building advice on your EDH deck. Play typically begins between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.
The 'official' EDH rules can be found here: http://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~geduggan/EDH_rules.html
Friday Night:
Friday night is reserved for Friday Night Magic (FNM). FNM is Wizard's lowest level competitive tournament. FNM is run as a booster draft format (current format is 2 Shards of Alara packs and 1 Conflux pack) and the cost is only $11. Special FNM promo cards are awarded as prizes as well as store credit for winners. The more people that participate, the higher the prize pool! FNM is a sanctioned tournament so you'll need a DCI number. If you don't have one, come on in and we can set you up with one. FNM sign-up begins at 6:00PM and the tournament starts at 6:30PM.
FNM is open for all levels of player and there are always folks willing to help out a new player or someone who has never drafted before. FNM is a great introduction to the magic tournament scene
Saturday:
Saturdays are for constructed format tournaments. The format will typically follow the current Pro Tour format--for example, we are currently in 'extended' season so the format will be extended. The cost is only $4 which goes towards a prize pool for the winners. If 8 or more people are present the tournament will be DCI sanctioned. Note that because of DCI sanctioning restrictions this will be a 16K REL (Rules Enforcement Level) event. This coming Saturday March 7th join "Team Relentless Dragon" players in Milford MA at the Pro Tour Honolulu Qualifier (PTQ) event.
Product Announcements:
By popular demand we will have 10th Edition boosters in stock this week. We were only able to obtain 3 booster boxes though! Due to the demand for these boosters we will not be selling these as sealed boxes. This may be the last opportunity to obtain 10th Edition before the release of Magic 2010 (see below) this summer.
We are trying to obtain more Conflux Fat Packs! People have been asking for these however they seem to be universally sold out at every distributor, including directly from Wizards.
Duel Decks: Demonic vs. Divine will be released on April 10th. Based on previous entries in the Duel Decks series and the fact that the Divine deck features a foil, alternate-art Akroma this will be a HOT item. We have plenty on order, but be sure to get yours early, just in case!
Alara Reborn, the 3rd and final set in the Alara block will be released on April 30th. Similar to previous releasess. we will be hosting pre-release and release tournaments for this set. Based on the turnout and excitement at the Conflux events, these events should be great fun for all players! Further details will be posted when we get closer to these events.
And finally--Magic 2010, or M10 as it is being called informally. Magic 2010 is the newly renamed set that would have been known as 11th Edition. Wizards has recently announced exciting changes to the Core Set product line which will begin with the summer 2009 set. Core Sets will now be released each summer instead of every 2 years, however, to avoid boredom and stagnation, Core Sets will now consist of approximately 50% reprints and 50% new cards! In addition, set sizes will be smaller (M10 will contain approximately 249 cards) to make things easier on the wallets of players and collectors. Wizards has already previewed a few of the new cards in M10 and they look great!
Supplies:
We are working on obtaining a greater selection of card sleeves, so please bear with us. We should have additional varieities in stock this week.
In addition, we've recently obtained a number of nice Ultra Pro 9 pocket card portfolios featuring the art from the Time Spiral block card Radha, Heir to Keld. Shown right.
We also have several Ultra Pro Magic the Gathering binders in stock. These padded 3" binders are black with a gold-stamped Magic logo. Shown left.
